High Street, Boroughbridge

Great North Road

The modern A1 mainly parallels the route of the Great North Road. Originally, it passed straight through the centre of Boroughbridge, but has since been moved.

According to Coxe, somewhere along the Great North Road between Boroughbridge and Scotch Corner, the road is haunted by that apparition of Tom Hoggett, who was a highwayman. Unfortunately, Coxe does not state where on the stretch of road he appears, other than somewhere between Boroughbridge and Scotch Corner (a distance of about 30 miles)!
